Underage Drinking

Have you seen the website www.drawyourline.com? It was advertised on the front page of 5/20/08 News Herald. There are some interesting parts to it. Check out "Harms" and see what an underage drinking habit can do to the brain of a teen. Encourage your child not to do any underage drinking to preserve their ability to think, have good judgment, and maintain a healthy status of their organs. As parents good health and success should be primary goals for our children.

New Grade Report

Parents, I am sending home the last grade report before end of semester narratives. If it applies, any missing work must be requested (8th math and science) by May 5th and turned in by May 12th. I will accept no make-up work past that date for work missed before that time.

Students need to keep the effort strong so we have a strong finish for the semester. I have seen some wonderful growth and improvement in many students. Keep it up!

Good, better, best; never let it rest until the good is better and the better is best!

Motion and Forces Science Test

There will be a test on Chapter 2 covering lots of vocabulary, Newton's 3 laws of motion, and math problems dealing with acceleration and momentum Thursday or Friday, April 24th or 25th. We will be reviewing with a set of vocabulary strips and definitions. Everyone will have their own set. Right before the test we will do our final motion experiment: Barbie Bungee. We'll be calculating how many rubber bands are needed to allow Barbie to safely drop from various heights and return unharmed.

If your conference report indicated work is missing and can be made up you must contact Mrs. Bock and ask her to put assignments together for you. Sometimes multiple copies have already been given out.

Grade Report Sent Home - 4th one

Parents,
Today, Friday, April 4, 2009, the 4th grade report was given to your student to bring home.
Grades are improving and that's no April Fools! Much of it is due to an increased number of assignments being turned in. Any spot that says NC is no credit because it has n0t been turned in. Keeping track of papers day-to-to day is important . Students should maintain a notebook or a folder system so each subject can be easily retrieved. A planner to record assignments would help if it is used. Many forget by the time the class is over. Every effort is given in all classes for any help a student may need along with time to do the work. We want to keep effort increasing for growth to reach the goals for year's end. Efficient use of time can give extra time for reading for pleasure - AR.

If this is not the 4th report you have seen ask your student what happened to them. Only the 2nd one was mailed to your home.
Have a great weekend!

Is it really global warming?

In my latest Ball State University Alumnus Magazine this letter to the editor caught my eye. What better reason to study science than to be able to make educated decisions about the ideas to which we offer our support, financially, politically, etc.?

No evidence that society causes climate change.

"...The greatest danger we face is not climate change, it is ignorance of facts about climate change.
As a graduate of Ball State's biology department, I was trained well in investigation using the scientific method for research, training which has been applied to the climate change issue for over two decades.
The most troubling 'fact' about global warming is the notion that we are the cause of it. There is ample scientific evidence that climate changes on a cyclical basis, completely independent of our influences. These climatic variability patterns have mirrored the solar output levels as far back as we have data.
There is no conclusive evidence that we humans are causing the temperataure to rise or change for that matter, by increasing the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. There is good data, however, that shows doubling the carbon dioxide level actually improves plant growth.
I am all for reducing pollution and living a life of moderate, sustainable consumption. It is unfortunate that the true science of climatology has fallen prey to a strong political element which uses false assumptions and distorted data to incite fear in order to effect change."
